He was personally instrumental in starting C.S.I. chapters from Portland, Maine to Erie, Pennsylvania, as well as San Juan, Puerto Rico.

IMI Director Speaks

Featured speaker at the 12th Annual Meeting of the Unit Masonry Association of Cincinnati was Neal English, Executive Director of the International Masonry Institute, Washington, D.C. The meeting was held on Friday, May 14th, at the Elks Lodge. J. James Murphy is Executive Director of the UMA of Cincinnati.

Change Cement Unit

Portland cement production in the United States will be measured in short tons instead of barrels, and the hundredweight (cwt) will become standard as a sales and marketing unit. Cement producers in the United States have indicated that they would make the transition January 1, 1972. The traditional 94-lb. bag size will not, however, be changed.

The term "barrel" originated in the 1870's when cement was shipped in wooden barrels which doubled as ballast in empty sailing ships. Cement also was shipped in barrels in its early days by the United States cement industry, but this method has not been used for at least 50 years. Still, the obsolete barrel has remained the unit of measure for marketing cement and reporting cement production.

The Portland Cement Association last year appointed a Special Committee to study the merits of changing from barrel (376 lb.) measurement to the short ton (2000 lb.).
