Masonry Withstands Two Major Fires
This masonry apartment house in Hackensack, N.J., still stands after two major fires in more than 40 years. The interior of the structure was rebuilt and its tenants, evacuated in 1971, have moved back in. Thomas Uzzalino, president of the Bergen County Conference of BM & PIU, cited the building as an example of how lives, property and money can be saved if more buildings are erected of masonry.

At Allied's plant, six granite slabs, each approximately three feet by nine feet and two inches thick, were placed face down in a steel mold. Anchors were installed, then a neoprene gasket was inserted into the joints to act as a secondary water stop. Each panel also was given a sheet of polyethelene bond braker, and then backed with concrete.
The huge finished panels, measuring 9 ft. x 18 ft. and weighing up to 18,000 pounds, were then trucked to the job-site in New York for erection by Allied's subcontractor, A.J. McNulty, Inc. McNulty used conventional truck cranes to erect the first nine floors, beginning in November, 1970. To handle the massive panels up to 40-story heights, however, the firm imported two giant Favco cranes from Australia, the first to be used on a job of this type in the U.S. These derricks have control systems so precise, a nine-ton panel can be located to within 1/32 of an inch by the operator. Allied has produced over one million square feet of stone-clad precast during the past three years, Paolella said, and at present is producing 180,000 square feet of marble-clad precast for a museum and cultural center in Albany, New York.

Case Acquires British Manufacturer
Tenneco Inc. announced it has reached an agreement in principle to acquire David Brown Tractors Ltd., a subsidiary of The David Brown Corporation Ltd., England. The announcement was issued jointly by N. W. Freeman, chairman and president of Tenneco, and Sir David Brown, chairman of The David Brown Corporation Ltd. Pending finalization, details of the transaction were not released. The agreement, which is subject to necessary approvals by the British government, calls for David Brown Tractors Ltd. to become an operating division of JI Case Company, a Racine (Wis.) based subsidiary of Tenneco. The David Brown Tractors Division will be staffed and managed by the present David Brown personnel, and management and will be directly responsible to the president of Case.
