"1972 Manual of New York City Building Code and Laws." Publisher: New York Society of Architects. $20.00 plus $1.40 tax. Publication date: July, 1972.

The 59th annual edition of the New York Society of Architect's Building Code Manual is now being distributed with a limited number of copies available to architects, engineers and contractors.

This is the only complete and up-to-date hard-cover-bound code book (now in two volumes) containing all of the other important city code and ordinances in addition to the New Building Code, amended to December 6, 1971. The work is highly recommended to all who are involved in the New York City construction trades as well as the New York Building Department Code Compliance.

Copies are available during business hours (10:30-4:00 p.m.) at the Society's office, 101 Park Ave., Room 831. North Wing, New York, N.Y. 10017. Copies to be mailed carry an additional charge of $1.75 for postage and handling.

"Shrinkage and Creep in Concrete: 1966-1970." Publisher: American Concrete Institute, Box 4754, Detroit, Mich. 48219. Paper cover; 8½ x 11. 100 pages. Drilled for three-ring binder. Price: $10.25; $7.50 to ACI members. Bibliography No. 10 by Committee 209. Publication date: July, 1972.

This is the second ACI bibliography on the present topic, the first one having been published in 1967 and covering the years 1905 (when the first paper on non-elastic deformation of concrete, now known as creep, was published) through 1966.

The present volume covers the years 1966 through 1970, and the reason for its appearance after so short an interval of time is that creep and shrinkage, far from having been shelved as solved problems, continue to loom large in the design of concrete structures-prestressed concrete, highly statically indeterminate structures, shells, nuclear pressure vessels, mass concrete, structures of high flexibility, long columns, and of late, tall buildings.

Bibliography Number 10 is restricted to publications dealing with the creep behavior of concrete; plain, reinforced, or prestressed, with the mechanism of creep and with design problems arising from creep. Altogether 271 items are reviewed, including the first comprehensive book devoted to creep and its effects.

The publications annotated include papers from around the world and in many languages. The annotations briefly summarize the findings so as to enable the user to select those publications which are likely to be of interest to him.

An author index and a subject index are included to facilitate the user's search.

"Nail Holding Power of Perlite Concrete." Publisher: Perlite Institute, Inc., 45 W. 45th St., New York, N.Y. 10036. 12 pages; 9 illustrations. 81/2 x 11. Publication date: July, 1972.

The Perlite Institute is distributing its most recent report detailing the holding power of self-clinching nails in lightweight perlite concrete roof decks. The booklet covers nail holding power of perlite concrete of different densities and age, three types of nails, as well as United State Test Company reports covering test procedure and data.

The tests reported in the publication conclude that the holding power of self-clinching nails in perlite concrete ranges from an average of 46 pounds ot more than 100 pounds. As a 120-mile per-hour wind has an uplift force on horizontally applied roofing of about 30 pounds, all tested nails had sufficient holding power to secure roofing.

The nails tested include the E. G. Insuldeck Loc-Nail, Simplex Tube-Lok nail, and E/S Products Nail-Tite MK III nail. The E/S Products nail is marketed under the name of Zono-Tite.

Roofing contractors usually nail the first ply of builtup roofing to perlite concrete roof decks to insure integrity of the roof. With perlite concrete roof decks, roofing may be applied as early as three days after the deck is poured thereby eliminating construction delays and speeding "closing in" of the structure.

Copies of "Nail Holding Power of Perlite Concrete" may be obtained from Perlite Institute, Inc.

Sighted on the rear of a taxi was the safe-driving slogan: "Have Your Eyes Ever Been Checked?" To which some wit had answered in crayon: "No, they've always been blue."
