Mountain Park Center

The brick walls were extended slightly above the steel, preventing storm water from coming in contact with the exterior brick facing, to obtain protection from the rusting and corrosion released by Cor-Ten during the weathering process. The two-wythe brick walls are generally 12" in width with four No. 4 reinforcing steel placed vertically at approximately four feet on center and grouted solid.
Artists designing this mural depicted waves sculptured in glazed brick projecting from the wall to achieve an eye catching feature on an otherwise plain brick wall in the swimming pool area.
Brick masonry walls are continued out into the landscaping, defining areas for walking and sitting. One particularly interesting area is the curved brick wall surrounding a large maple tree and supporting a curved glued laminated bench. Throughout Mountain Park objects of art are used to signify the purpose of a particular facility. The recreation center displays a bronze sculpture of swimmers in the entrance court and glazed brick murals on the walls of the swimming pool. The architects felt that the brick had to blend into and be a part of the brick walls surrounding the 50-meter pool.
With this in mind, Mr. and Mrs. Ray Grimm of Portland, noted for their design ability in the field of ceramies and clay products, were commissioned to create the murals. Openings were left in the brick walls where the murals were to be placed. The designs were transferred from full-size drawings onto the grouted wall surface. The openings were then inserted with interesting color tones of glazed brick. The mason contractor projected or recessed the units at the direction of the Grimms to achieve a rewarding effect.
PCA Stresses Growth Opportunities
The cement industry must respond to the challenges and opportunities for growth offered by the changing business climate of the '70's. This was the message delivered to more than 200 leaders of the industry during the May 11-12 annual meeting of the Portland Cement Association in Chicago.
Senior management from more than 40 companies in the United States and Canada heard discussions of the impact of changing business conditions upon marketing, research, and the industry's approach to public affairs. The meeting featured an address by Sen. Jennings Randolph (D-W. Va.), chairman of the Senate Public Works Committee, who urged business leaders to help government reorder national priorities, emphasizing his view that "business productivity must parallel environmental improvement. The two must not be frictionized."
