Atlanta
Now you can experience Atlanta as she was in the 80's and 90's-gaslit and roaring and gay. Every shop, every saloon, every bistro in The Underground is one-of-a-kind. Sidewalk cafes, gourmet restaurants, pubs, boutiques and curiosity shops now line the streets of Atlanta's birthplace. And there are banjo singalongs and progressive jazz, oysters on the half-shell and Irish Stout. Historical displays, cabaret theatre, reading of the stars and much more.
With four major league teams performing in Atlanta - the baseball Braves, football Falcons, basketball Hawks and soccer Chiefs - the city indeed ranks as the sports center of the Southeast, drawing spectators from as far as 170 miles away.
As the result of its obvious enthusiasm for sporting events, Atlanta has expanded its facilities more rapidly than perhaps any national city of comparable size. At the center of the expansion is a magnificent sports stadium completed in 1965 at a cost of some $18 million and reflecting the best features to be found in stadiums of major cities throughout the nation. The huge circular facility situated near downtown Atlanta seats 52,000 for baseball and soccer, 58,850 for football.
Located high on the Piedmont Plateau of North Georgia, Atlanta enjoys a topography well-suited for recreational purposes a rolling terrain, abundant lakes and streams, large areas of substantial forest, and a climate that permits year-round outdoor activity.
One of the country's major family fun centers-Six Flags Over Georgia-is located only ten miles west of downtown Atlanta. The 276-acre, multi-million-dollar park presents Georgia's colorful and dramatic history under six flags through more than 75 shows and exhibits.
Another famous attraction, Stone Mountain Park, 3,800 acres of recreational facilities, historic museums and restored ante-bellum houses, is built around Stone Mountain just sixteen miles east of Atlanta. The world's largest body of exposed granite, Stone Mountain has the biggest sculpture ever created carved on its face-colossal figures of Robert E. Lee, Jefferson Davis and Stonewall Jackson astride their mounts. Designed as a Confederate memorial, this truly magnificent sculptural achievement surpasses even the sculptural work on Mount Rushmore in size and magnitude.
A fun-loving city, Atlanta has a jet-set all its own. Nightlife, as diversified as musical moods, offers something for everyone. Including yourself!
