Architects: Craig, Zeidler & Strong, Toronto, Ont. Mason Contractor: Edmond Rosset Masonry Ltd., Sault Ste. Marie. "A strongly defined form responding to the functions and visual environment of the Saulte Ste. Marie landscape. Thorough and persistent use of brick has produced a clear and potent architectural statement. Bright and cheerful interiors are created by painted concrete block and colorful graphics and furnishings." There is a simple, consistent use of building materials forming the skin over the steel frame. Brick cladding covers all vertical surfaces.

Northern Ontario Health Science Schools
Sudbury, Ontario

Architects: Townend, Stefura, Baleshta & Pfister; Sudbury, Toronto. Mason Contractor: Northway Masonry Company Ltd., Sudbury. Awards Jury Comments: "An outstanding solution to a difficult institutional problem-grouping nursing, radiology and medical technology schools into a single building that is intimate, friendly and warm. Careful attention paid to landscaping, color coordination, use of materials and detailing provides a series of casual but comprehensible movement experiences." Unit masonry was chosen as the major building material because of its aesthetic qualities, versatility, durability and economy. Except for a few minor areas, the entire exterior is a thru-the-wall Canadian modular clay brick. Use of a premixed colored mortar that approaches the color of the brick results in a monolithic planar appearance to the entire building.
