Masonry Seminar Held in Portland

Approximately 200 architects, structural engineers, building officials and members of the Masonry Industry attended a luncheon recently at the Portland (Ore.) Hilton Hotel to hear James E. Amhreim introduce a new technical publication, "Reinforced Masonry Engineering Handbook." The 320-page book, copies of which were presented to all those in attendance, boils down engineering information from several sources into one very useful volume dealing with vertical and lateral forces created by wind-loads and seismic action on the Pacific Coast. Hosting the event was the Northwest Brick Association in cooperation with the Oregon Masonry Guild. Serving as master of ceremonies was Ray F. Wimer, executive director of the guild and MCAA Northwest field rep.

To serve the projected increase in Cape Ann's future population growth, the Steele Wing can be expanded vertically. The current total of 155 beds will handle present needs; two additional floors can be built on top of the wing at a later date. Removable, reuseable panels of cement asbestos which now finish off the building's parapet and stairwell tops will facilitate the transition from a three-story to a five-story facility. William J. Mello, Jr., AIA, served as project architect for the Steele Wing. Interior design consultant was Antraning Der Marderosian, Inc., Cambridge, Mass.

Out-patient and emergency waiting room in the new Steele Wing. Tandem seating is upholstered in vermillion vinyl which accents the gradations of red in the exposed brick.

A great way to combine business and pleasure! Plan to attend the '74 MCAA Annual Convention & Educational Trade Show in Las Vegas, Hilton International Hotel, February 24-28.
