This dramatic wall of the Convention Center's mezzanine floor was achieved with customized split-ribbed masonry units.

on this huge undertaking while Superlite Builders Supply, Inc. of Phoenix supplied the block for the entire development.

The split-ribbed units with 2" flutes were used both for loadbearing walls and as a veneer for conventional block back-up walls. The customized block features flowing vertical lines with considerable texture, creating shadow patterns that change with the desert sun. This daily effect complements the breathtaking mountains enveloping Phoenix as they too change appearance during the course of a day.

The versatility and adaptability of block was put to the ultimate test during the construction and planning of the mammoth complex. Its architectural flexibility and all-weather strength met all challenges with room to spare. In all, more than 1,125,000 block were laid-with 536,000 of the units in 39 different shapes and sizes. Block widths of 4", 8", 9" and 12" were employed.
