Water, seeping into the masonry, has weakened the structure completed in 1895. The 151'-high wall of scaffolding will be moved from its present location on the east face of the building to the other sides as the work progresses.
The frames, combined with more than 8,500 of tube and coupler scaffolding, were erected to form the temporary massive structure which provided 20 working levels. The entire scaffold was built on top of a 836-long PSCo. sidewalk canopy that extends completely around the building. The canopy is set on steel I-beam ledgers because the sidewalk is hollow. Deterioration of the building facade was discovered when a piece of masonry fell to the sidewalk from one of the upper floors of the building.
Dahlman Construction Co. and Louis Hoffman Co. are contractors on the job which is scheduled for completion in 1974.
