certain size and involve natural stone work.

Prestenburg continues: "Usually there just isn't enough time to get paper copies of the plans for the more distant jobs. And if we did, it would cost $100 to $300 for a set of architectural drawings. We cover our market with SCAN for one-tenth what it would cost to bid the same jobs from hard copy." He concludes: "I believe SCAN would be a great value to any aggressive firm wanting to do more work outside its immediate area."

Dick Whitman, marketing manager for Graystone Block Co. of Modesto, Calif., cites increased efficiency as his reason for using Dodge/SCAN. "All in all, SCAN is like having a couple of extra estimators or our very own plan room," he states. "The only difference is that it costs a lot less. I can't say exactly how much money we save, but I do know we're able to review the plans of a lot more jobs and also make better take-offs on the jobs we decide to go after."

Expressing the opinion that any mason contractor could use Dodge/SCAN profitably, Whitman adds: "It doesn't seem to matter whether you're big or small, urban or rural. If you have to see plans and specifications, you just can't beat SCAN,"

Executives of the four firms volunteered to discuss their uses of SCAN during recent interviews. Tape recorded highlights of their comments are being incorporated into a Dodge/SCAN exhibit at the annual convention of the Mason Contractors Association of America in Atlanta, February 23-28.

a Federal remedy against careless or corrupt practices will likely be approved.

THE OUTLOOK IS DIM FOR PASSAGE OF MAJOR HOUSING LEGISLATION in 1973. Congressional staffers say there's no political consensus on housing needs. Congress is very uneasy about subsidized housing after recent FHA scandals. It wants to know how to build low-income housing in major high-cost cities. What's more, the White House is now disenchanted with big housing schemes.

CONGRESS WILL CONSIDER SWEEPING CHANGES in the entire criminal code, but it is unlikely that controversial revisions could be completed in 1973. The Justice Department is working on Administration proposals for shifts. Suggested legislation should be ready to go to Congress some time this year. In addition, a Senate subcommittee staff has drafted a criminal law measure.

A KEY CONSUMER PROTECTION MEASURE MAY FINALLY WIN APPROVAL this year. Democrats will make another try to establish a consumer protection agency. Consumer groups also plan to renew their fight for the legislation in 1973. But President Nixon remains cool to the suggestion of an independent agency. Nixon feels the White House Office of Consumer Affairs is all that's needed.
