Reading Between the Lines...
as-so-ci-a'tion n. 1. An associating or being associated. 2. Fellowship. 3. An organization of persons having common purposes. 4. A connection between ideas.
An interesting aspect of these meanings is the order in which the dictionary lists them. Any group's significance to members really starts when they join it. Until then, it's just another name on a letterhead or a jumble of initials reminding one of a government agency. The nonmember knows vaguely that it renders something in return for dues. But even a detailed description is only so many words until participation gives them life.
Step 2 is fellowship, which can be both the prime motive for joining and the most-prized end result. Ask any veteran member what he gets out of belonging and you will find "The friends I made" at the head of the list. Being with them at meetings, working with them on committees and knowing one can call on them for advice and assistance is a treasured and warmly personal award. The "common purpose" also grows with acquaintance. The generalities in the published Statement of Purpose are reflected in specific acts, benefits and services which require experience to evaluate. New functions develop from time to time in response to members' needs and ingenuity. Innovations are one test of group effectiveness: "When you stop getting better, you stop being good."
No appraisal of belonging is complete without a reference to ideas. They are generated by the three preceding elements in the definition and are also an important factor in Meaning No. 3. The human mind is a supercomputer with unlimited storage, random access and total recall. But input is the governing factor; the program depends on a steady flow of information, checkpoints and thought-starters.

Block Beautifies California Firehouse
The rapidly expanding Sacramento Port District is now served by an efficient and aesthetically beautiful fire-fighting facility. It's Firehouse No. 3 at 1561 Harbor Blvd. in West Sacramento. Completed at a cost of $107,000, the building architecturally can be described as Spanish in character with handsome arched doorways, a walled entrance patio that features a wrought iron gate, and earth-toned concrete slump block exemplifying the mood of old California. The block structural walls are steel reinforced and grouted. The firehouse was designed by architects Cox, Liske, Lionakis & Beaumont with masonry by John Jackson (MCAA) of Sacramento.
