Kenneth D. Claes, a senior in the School of Architecture at Lawrence Institute of Technology, displays the apartment project design that earned him first place in a masonry design competition sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Michigan.
Masonry Design Competition
Eleven Lawrence Institute of Technology architectural students divided $1,025 in cash awards as the winners of the first masonry design competition sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Michigan. The cash winners, plus nine additional students who received recognition as finalists in the competition, were honored at a banquet on May 10 at the Engineering Society of Detroit.
While the Masonry Institute provided the prizes, details of the competition were set up by Dr. Earl W. Pellerin, FAIA, director of Lawrence Institute's School of Architecture. Dr. Pellerin outlined the design problems-an apartment project for his senior class and an office building for the juniors. Entries were judged by a distinguished jury that included nine Detroit-area architects.
Senior competition winners were: first place ($250), Kenneth D. Claes of Clawson; 2nd place ($125), Gary J. Cornillaud, Milford; 3rd place ($75), Joseph C. Monroe, (Continued on page 38)
