Brickwork Enhances New S.F. Building
Decorative brickwork reminiscent of the Victorian period is the predominant design theme of Fromm & Sichel's new headquarters on San Francisco's waterfront. Ed Miranda of Jorgensen Masonry Co., contractor for the brickwork, points out patterns of projected headers, sawtooth and dentil designs for Les Bellecci of Port Costa Products Co., the brick manufacturer. Fromm & Sichel, Inc. is the exclusive worldwide distributor for Christian Brothers wines and brandy. The new building, due for completion in mid-August, will recall the ornate Victorian architecture of that earlier time when decorative brickwork gave buildings an unmistakable stamp of originality that has been identified with San Francisco for decades.

First CMI Scholarship Awarded
Randall Allen Foco (center), a third-year environmental design student at the University of Colorado, was awarded the first Colorado Masonry Institute scholarship at ceremonies in Denver. He is shown here being congratulated by Jack Bailey (left), president of CMI, and Sandy Sandoval, executive director. The scholarship carries a stipend of $600 and was one of seven presented in the program under the sponsorship of the Educational Fund, Colorado Society of Architects.
Cooling Tower Cuts Lake Pollution
These graceful columns support a massive hyperbolic cooling tower built for Northern Indiana Public Service Co. The first to be constructed on Lake Michigan, the tower provides a closed-cycle, natural draft cooling system which takes warm water from the condenser of the company's new 520,000-kilowatt generating plant, cools it, and returns it to the condenser over and over so that no warm water is returned to the lake, thus eliminating any threat of thermal pollution. Approximately 15,000 barrels of cement were used in constructing the tower.
Superior Fireplace Hosts Meeting
Superior Fireplace Co., Fullerton, Calif. and Baltimore, Md., recently hosted the second national sales meeting for its fireplace consultants in the new Fullerton plant showroom. The conference was designed to give the consultants the additional information needed to make further market penetration with the company's products aimed at reducing construction costs.
