short of the top of the wall.

At the time of the test, the age of the wall varied from 3 days at the base to 30 hours at the top. Load was applied by creating a vacuum on the leeward side, allowing the atmosphere to apply pressure or load to the windward side. The difference in internal and external pressure was measured with a manometer. It was applied intermittently to a total of 37 psf, or an equivalent wind velocity of over 120 mph. Throughout the test, deflections were constantly measured at 12 different points on the wall. Maximum deflection was ½" at the top of the wall. After relieving the pressure, the wall returned to within 1/16" of its original position. Testing was later continued to failure. As a result, Underwriters Laboratories Inc. granted its approval and labeling service. The complete report titled "Temporary Bracing For Masonry Walls-U.L.. File MH9645" is available from Bracing Systems, Inc., Wheaton, III., or from Underwriters Laboratories, Inc., Northbrook, III.

Crews don't always take care of mixers. That's why Gilson builds mixers to survive tortures of high turnpike speeds, ruts and boulders, "new" hired help. Heavy non-twist, electrically welded main frames keep all components rigidly aligned. And blade shafts run on precision ball bearings lubricated for life. Concrete mixer tilting models with 3½ and 6 cu. ft. capacities. Non-tilting in 31%, 6, 11, and 16 cu. ft. sizes. Mortar-plaster mixers in 32, 52, 6, 8, and 10 cu. ft. sizes. The procedure for installing these braces is quite simple. Prior to starting work, the drawings are marked locating the braces. Removable angles are set on top of the foundation wall at the predetermined locations, and the masonry work commences until the first block course is laid over the angles. Two snap tie-like rods are placed on top of this course directly above the angles. The work progresses normally until the wall and scaffold are 11' high. At this time, without halting work on the wall, the first stage of bracing is erected. The bottom channel (7) is set on mud sills and over studs on the angles. The vertical is attached to the channel by means of a fixed pin; the 3" diameter diagonals are also installed by use of pins and the adjusting screw is tightened until the vertical is snug against the wall.

The second stage (6) is installed after the wall height reaches 18 feet. It is placed in similar fashion as the first stage. Once the roof structure is in place the braces and base angles are removed, ready for use again. The protruding portion of the ties is broken, and the openings are pointed.

During the past year the system has been used satisfactorily on thousands of feet of wall, under all conditions.
