Pavers (by Harrison Walker Paver)
Pavers were selected to provide handsome and easily maintained floors for high traffic areas and to further emphasize the masonry theme.
Landscaping, the largest single private contract let to date in Michigan, was designed by a division of the architects' office. The landscaping features large expanses of lawn and ground cover.
One of the unique design features of the architectural layout is the entry to the building which is on the second level. This was placed there to encourage the use of stairs and reduce elevator loads. In a three-story module, only one flight of stairs must be ascended or descended to reach the next level. Main elevator use is in reaching the fourth-floor executive offices.
Charles J. Byrne, chief signage designer in the SH&G graphics group, summed up the architectural concepts of the project this way: "The entire character of the Kresge complex reflects order and competence in an environment of the highest quality."
