New Energy Code Coming for Buildings
A new energy code for buildings is in the works, with the first version expected in January. Currently, a professional organization of engineers is researching and rewriting rules. If all goes as planned, the Bureau will have a final code ready by year-end.
At least 15 states are ready to move, once the standards are agreed on. Existing building codes were written when energy was cheap and abundant. Now there are literally hundreds of potential ways to save on energy in building construction.
Metric System Conversion Unlikely
Chances are very dim for a coordinated conversion to the metric system. The House recently rejected a measure calling for a 10-year voluntary plan. Labor and small business forces were successful in killing the legislation. They complained that the measure lacked needed government financial help. Conversion costs would have been staggering under the White House proposal. It called for industry including small firms to pay expenses for switching. And labor union members would have had to foot the bill for their new tools.
About the only hope is for the Senate to revive a bill passed in 1973. But it's unlikely Congress will act again this year.
Crackdown on Age Bias
Washington is going to crack down on bias against people over age 40. The Labor Department is starting an enforcement drive to aid older workers. A new special task force has now been set up just to handle age-bias cases. Labor has found firms firing older workers to bring in younger ones at low wages. Sometimes, workers are fired just before they are due for pension benefits.

Perlite Filled Cavities Conserve Energy
Heat transmission can be reduced by 50% or more when silicone treated perlite loose fill insulation is poured into the hollow cores of concrete block or cavity type masonry walls. In fact, cavity walls of face brick and tile show a 63% reduction! But that's not all. Silicone treated perlite loose fill insulation is water repellent-indefinitely.
Specs call for a concrete block wall? Perlite loose fill insulation can help too! By filling the core holes with perlite loose fill insulation your fire rating will be doubled to 4 hours and your "U" factor improved by 54%. And you don't have to worry about permanence. Silicone treated perlite is inorganic and rot, vermin and termite proof. And it's non-combustible with its fusion point of 2300°F.
Even a veneer wall of brick and concrete block can show a 52% improvement in insulating value when filled with loose fill perlite. Don't worry about settling -silicone treated perlite supports its own weight in the wall without settling-and it's easy to handle too! Thanks to its countless glass-like cells it's light-weight and easily poured. It's quick-it's inexpensive and it's permanent-the perfect material for insulating masonry walls.
