Meet Your New President
One of the Masonry Industry's most knowledgeable and dynamic leaders, Charles Velardo of Newton Highlands, Mass., has taken the helm of MCAA as President, following his election at the Annual Convention in Las Vegas on February 28.
His credentials qualifying him for this important post are borne out by his varied and active career with MCAA as well as the industry in general. One of the founders of the Mason Contractors Association of Massachusetts, Charley directed that group as President for six years. He also served MCAA as Vice President for two years and prior to that was Regional Vice President responsible for the northeastern sector of the nation (Region A) and State Chairman of Massachusetts.
He has been extremely active on the Masonry Industry All-Weather Council, having served as the first Chairman and one of the prime movers in its establishment. He considers the success of this program to be "one of our greater accomplishments as an organization and a great personal satisfaction to myself."
Filling other vital positions in the industry, Charley is Secretary and a Trustee of the International Masonry Institute, the industry's promotional arm based in Washington, D.C.
In his business role. Charley holds three offices Vice President, Treasurer and General Manager- with G. Salvucci & Company, Inc. of Newton Highlands, a Boston suburb. The Salvucci firm specializes in major masonry projects throughout the New England area. First a bricklayer, beginning in 1936, and then a government engineer with the Public Housing Administration, Charley joined Salvucci & Company in 1961.
During World War II, Charley served with the Navy Department after having attended Boston College and Northeastern University. He holds the distinction of being a member of one of America's most unique and prestigious organizations the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company in Massachusetts. Founded in 1638, it is the oldest military order in the Western Hemisphere.
Hunting, fishing and golf are Charley's favorite pastimes, but he is quick to add that he enjoys his work, the MCAA and the industry. A devoted family man, he and his wife, Anne, have three daughters-Anne, Priscilla and Valerie, and two grandsons, Anthony and Charles Pagliazzo.
