RICHMOND, Calif. A boldly sculptured Capwell's department store, designed to serve residents of Western Contra Costa County and this growing city of 90,000, has entered construction in Hilltop Center. Designed by the national architectural and engineering firm of Welton Becket Associates, the three-level store will open off the eastern end of the enclosed, multi-level, one million-square-foot shopping mall. General contractor is Dinwiddie Construction Co. of San Francisco.
"On the exterior of Capwell's, split-faced concrete block will be vertically scored to create a warm and subtle dimensional effect," said architect Nick Primiani, A.I.A, director of the Becket firm's San Francisco office. "The mass of the building was softened by designing curved corners, contrasting materials, and recesses at strategic points.
"To identify the store's three recessed entrances, we designed red-orange ceramic tile elements which will rise slightly higher than the block walls," Primiani added. Each element will have the name "Capwell's," executed in bold, white lettering, on its face.
This is the 15th Capwell's or Emporium department store designed by Welton Becket Associates for the Emporium-Capwell Co. in Northern California. The Becket firm also is the mechanical and electrical engineer for the Hilltop store. Structural engineer is L. F. Robinson of San Francisco.
Pre-Apprentice Course Is Big Success
Outstanding pre-apprentice graduate award, a complete kit of tools is presented to Brent Heddleston by Doug MacLaren, Chairman Architectural Trades, George Brown College, Toronto.
The first pre-apprenticeship training program in Ontario wound up its successful 20 weeks recently, with 11 of the original 20 students completing the course. Held from February to June, the Canada Manpower-sponsored project is considered "a breakthrough for apprentice training in Ontario", says Neil Fraser, Executive Director of the Canadian Masonry Contractors' Association. "All graduates were immediately placed with masonry contractors in the province, and we could have handled twice as many.
