The Pittsburgh Hilton is seen in the background as the masonry work
in Point State Park is inspected by: (L-R) Mason Contractor Joseph

way the park and fountain.

Conservationists and preservationists will be especially
pleased to know that some of the sandstone seen in the
park is from the original wall of the Wabash Railroad
Terminal. Several hundred thousand Ligionier block-stone
in the park were formerly paving in Pittsburgh's old cobble-
stone streets.

As Americans look at this tiny tip of land today, they're
prone to ask why it was so important to the French, then
the British and finally the Americans.

Historians indicate that the French built Fort Duquesne,
then the British put considerable time and money into Fort
Pitt, because of the importance of controlling the upper
Ohio Valley. Even cliff locations above the rivers did
not give them the control afforded by this site. Ironically.
about 17 years later the Americans for whom the fort was
built declared their independence from England.

What happened to Fort Pitt as an operating military-
post? Well, work was halted in 1765 and repairs ceased in
1766 since there was no longer a military need for it. Ten
years later, people in what is now the Pittsburgh area, and
throughout the new nation, were celebrating their indepen-
dence. By 1800, Fort Pitt was past history-with its log
and frame structures washed, burned or rotted away. Only
its brick and stone structures, walls and fortifications were
left standing as a reminder of an early phase of the na
tion's history and still visible today and throughout 1976
as we celebrate our nation's Bicentennial.

AED POLL INDICATES
INDUSTRY RECOVERY

Appreciable evidence that the nation's single largest in-
dustry-construction may be finally emerging from the
economic recession is reflected in the results of a recent
poll of construction equipment distributors and manufac
turers throughout the United States. They are predicting
a relatively substantial sales upturn during the second half
of the year.

This generally optimistic forecast by these members of
