NEED INFORMATION? CHECK THE
NEW U.S. GOVERNMENT MANUAL
When was the War Department created?
What's APHIS?
Whatever happened to the Bond and Spirits Division of the Justice Department?
What's MESBIC?
If you want information on federal monuments and memorials, what government agencies do you contact?
These answers and thousands of other facts are in the new U.S. Government Manual. Publication of the 1975-76 version of this annual best-seller was announced today by the U.S. General Services Administration.
The manual describes the purposes and major programs of government agencies and lists their top personnel. The 831-page official guidebook's introduction tells where activities and responsibilities of federal agencies can be found, and includes a list of Federal Information Centers maintained by GSA nationwide.
Within the manual, most agency descriptions include a "sources of information" section that gives addresses and telephone numbers for easy use in making contact within an agency and for obtaining specifics on employment, government contracts, environmental programs, publications and other items of public interest.
The manual, prepared by the Office of the Federal Register of GSA's National Archives and Records Service, may be obtained for $6.50 from the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office, Washington, D.C. 20402.
By the way, the second executive department, "the War Department, was created Aug. 7, 1789, (page 755); APHIS is the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (page 759); the Bond and Spirits Division was abolished in 1942-its functions were transferred to the Justice Department's Tax, Claims and Criminal Division, (page 673); MESBIC stands for Minority Enterprise Small Business Investment Companies, (page 761); and all agencies having to do with monuments and memorials are listed as part of the new subject index (page 818).
