Masonry's "M" Factor
(Continued from page 21)
are meant to apply to ten different masonry wall constructions for each of eight different orientations, that is, north, northeast, east, southeast, etc. and for each of ten different cities.
The types of masonry walls to be included in the study cover a series varying from 44 to 116 lbs/sq. ft. wall weights and these will be compared to the light steel sandwich panels (4 lbs/sq. ft.) and the wood frame (7 lbs/sq. ft.) types of construction. The results of this study are to be prepared in the form of tables which will be accompanied by appropriate charts and text. The text shall describe the significance and impact of the thermal flywheel effect of any wall on the heat transfer of any building. Further, it will discuss the effect of sizing and selection of mechanical equipment required to heat and cool a building and the ultimate effects of the energy consumption and fuel economy of the building. The report will be backed up with a review of applicable literature, a bibliography, and a statement of the logic of the concept. Examples of how to use the "M" factor and its specific effect on specific conditions shall be included.
This, for the first time, will allow us to promote, in a more specific fashion the savings that can be effected through the use of smaller heating and air conditioning equipment with masonry construction because of its heat storage capacity. Hopefully, we will be able to demonstrate also the savings effected by a near continuous use of smaller size equipment versus the more intermittent use of larger equipment.
It is expected that after this study has been developed and published that the masonry industry committee will engage the services of Hankins & Anderson, Inc. for educational and promotional work. That is, we would use their service for review of promotional type publications to make sure that the facts are not lost or distorted in the promotional literature. We also anticipate that the firm will make appearances before the major technical societies representing their peer group in order to speed up the acceptance of this new design concept.
