Less Than 5 Weeks To Close-In

The new five-story Sperry Univac Building overlooking Interstate Route 610 Loop West in Houston, Texas, is a striking structure, embodying all the warmth and charm of well-designed masonry construction. The masonry of the attractive building was constructed of brick panels fabricated in a plant and shipped to the job site several miles away for assembly.

Although the building technique of using prefabricated brick panel curtain walls is new to the Houston area, it has proven to be fast, effective and economical in many other areas of the United States. The unusual strength of the panels is made possible by the use of Sarabond brand mortar additive. Sarabond, added to conventional mortar, bonds the brick in a structure that is actually stronger than the brick themselves. This allows fabrication of single-wythe walls rather than thicker walls using conventional mortar. And the in-plant all-weather fabrication of the walls results in considerable economy as well as faster construction.

Masonry Systems of Texas, mason contractor on the job, fabricated the panels in its plant and trucked the 7½ x 32', 8,000 lb. units five miles to the job site. At the site, the brick panels were hoisted into position by cranes.

The 7½ x 32 ft., 8,000 lb. single-wythe panels were hoisted into place at the Sperry Univac Building job site by crane. Cables were secured to hooks fabricated into the panels for the hoisting operation.

This wholesale on-the-job erection cut process costs and reduced construction time dramatically. The entire Sperry Univac Building was closed-in within five weeks of the construction start.

Turner Smith of Masonry Systems of Texas feels that this type of panelization is the first step toward a building systems approach by people in the masonry market. According to Smith, "This has the potential to recapture part of the market masonry has lost to glass and metal skin."
