PLAN OF BLOCK
One of the surprises of the contest came when two architects submitted nearly the same designs. They were Donald R. Mowry, ARA, Sunrise, Fla, and William S. Schafer, Coral Gables, Fla. The large curved flutes in the units makes for some interesting shadow play.
Customized Design Contest Winners
(Continued from page 7)
James Ream of San Francisco, California who submitted a winning entry has also designed a science museum now under construction in California where this unit is being used. His intent was not only a unit that would provide unique wall interest but that would align perfectly whether used in running or stacked bond.
Two circular column like projections and a single score designed by Oscar Sklar of Bay Harbor Island, Florida also captured the contest judges' imagination.
With such a tremendous scope and quality of interest as evidenced by architects in this design contest, not only can a whole new storehouse of customized concrete masonry units be anticipated but they could indeed change the face of construction in the future.
