CHINGUACOUSY DAY CARE CENTRE
Bramalea, Ontario
Architects and Consulting Structural Engineers were Allward & Gouinlock. General and Mason Contractor: M. Lee Masonry Ltd.
Jury Comment: A pleasant building, most suitable in scale and character for its use, in spite of an obviously low budget. The central organizing space works well, making the entire structure most comprehensible, especially for small children.
This was one of the few buildings submitted which utilized straight-forward load-bearing masonry construction to achieve a simple and dignified result.
The jury questioned the ground floor fenestration, which seemed most unsatisfactory, especially from the exterior, and the function of the upper mezzanine within the central space; it appears to have little purpose.
GENERAL TIRE & RUBBER CO. OF CANADA LTD.

Salter & Allison were the Architects with Consulting Engineers, J. A. W. Nesbitt. Mason Contractors: Bur-lin-Ranger Co. with Bentorswell Construction Ltd. the General.
Jury Comment: An unpretentious, straight-forward building which successfully integrates its office and industrial functions. Well sited with good organization of parking and access. The boldly coloured metal cladding has been most successfully combined with the grey striated cleft face concrete masonry. It is commendable that these materials are used throughout and are combined in a rational way rather than being allocated to produce a "prestige" or "front office" image; this is not a "front elevation" building. The striated cleft face block effectively conceals the vertical joints producing a surprisingly monolithic character. Lack of special corner units makes outside corners difficult to handle in that the thin "facing" function of the masonry is revealed at these joints.

Brook-Carruthers-Grierson-Shaw were the Architects with Consulting Structural Engineers, John Maryon & Partners. The Mason Contractors were George & Asmussen Ltd. with Plorins & Pede Ltd. the General.
Jury Comment: Beautiful crisp details combined with small scale massing make this a most inviting building.
The apparent simplicity of this structure is deceiving. Directness of detail has been achieved by hard work and ingenuity, and reduction in the scale of what is a substantial institution to a domestic level by clever massing; all to the great credit of the architects.
The jury found the rear elevation with its battered, over-hanging facade a discordant element which is disturbingly inconsistent.
GEORGE BROWN COLLEGE OF APPLIED ARTS & TECHNOLOGY
Toronto, Ontario
Architects: Fairfield and Dubois, Alan R. Moody with M. S. Yolles Associates the Consulting Structural Engineers. DeLuca & Mascarin the Mason Contractor and Dufferin Building Materials Ltd. the General.
Jury Comment: A bold and ingenious pre-cast structure which uses concrete masonry units as a simple infill system. The whole effect reminds one of children's building blocks which can perform an immense variety of functions. This architect has invented a building system and exploited its potential-a rare achievement to attain in a single building. This simple range of material elements has been used to achieve a great variety of interesting interior and exterior spaces.
