CONCLUSION

The proper selection of mortar to achieve desired performance, along with the proper selection of masonry units, placed with care in accordance with the specifications, should assure better performing masonry walls. It is also necessary to assure that proper mixing procedures and batching procedures are used for the mortar manufactured at the job site.

This Technical Notes sets forth general basic rules for the selection of mortar types for particular uses. It is important to remember - never use a mortar stronger than is necessary to do the job.

This Technical Notes also illustrates some economical and relatively simple procedures to control the batching of mortar.

If the recommendations and suggestions contained in this Technical Notes are followed with judgment and care, the result will be better performing brick masonry with less leaky walls, less cracking, less efflorescence and fewer problems all around.
