Loadbearing Masonry Construction
(Continued from page 10)

This was accomplished by the extensive use of antique modular clay brick veneer.

The tower plan and construction is similar to the Ramada Inn in Dallas, except for the following:

(1) The contractor chose to use a conventional poured-in-place concrete floor system, using four pours per floor, since this method was as fast as flying forms due to the lower tower height, and its open courtyard within. Concrete and other materials were lifted in place by use of a truck crane.

(2) The tower floor plan is rectangular with recessed balconies except at end units, rather than pin wheeled like the Ramada. The 22 rooms surround a central core containing stairs, services, elevators and a 3-story open atrium for each group of three floors. The elevator lobby extends under the atrium on the Ist, 4th and 7th floors while the upper 2 floors bridge the opening; and one wall enhanced with historic artifacts extends 3-stories to an artificial skylite. The tower was constructed a floor each week and a half and was completed prior to delivery of steel which was ordered for the long span meeting room space, prior to start of masonry construction.

Tips for Mason Contractors and Manufacturers

The ability to produce concrete block for multi-story structural use, high stress or ASTM Grade A, is not just an attribute that only large manufacturers have. The size of the plant has no bearing.

The five constructed projects designed by our firm in San Diego contain concrete block manufactured by three of the four local producers. Both the Hanalei and Town and Country Hotels, owned by Atlas Hotels, and the Port O' Call Hotel, contain block by Hazard Products. Hazard uses three Besser V-12 machines for production. They manufacture 600 sizes and shapes, including numerous special units that have been conceived by various architects. Their annual production is five million units.

The block of the Hilton Inn was manufactured by Modern Block of Oceanside. Modern uses two Bessers for standard block and a Columbia machine for slump block and other special lines. They average two to three million 8 x 8 x 16, or equivalent units a year.

Barracks P-005 contained block by Tru-Block Concrete Products. They used two Columbia machines to produce 2,825,000 equivalent units, almost 100 shapes, in 14 basic sizes in 1970. The fourth manufacturer, R.C.P. Company, has two machines and is now producing high stress (2831 psi average) for their first high rise.

Three different Mason Contractors also were involved on these 5 projects. Also the same contractors did not always use the same source to purchase their materials.

The main production requirements are quality control of the product from manufacture to delivery, and the ability to work with the Mason and General Contractors, to produce the requirements of engineered masonry, that are indicated on the architect's plans and in his specifications. A one story warehouse with concrete block, faced with brick on the exterior or even exposed, is a familiar type of use for most Mason Contractors and manufacturers. The block is ordered, delivered, laid up, and left completed without any problems, or much concern. When concrete block is used as the only structural element in an eight story building that has been programmed by a PERT or critical path schedule (CPM), that requires 16,500
