Another. Therefore, the following are suggested physical requirements for brick units to be used with Sarabond mortar additive:
1. Brick units should be extruded, side cut units.
2. They should conform to the requirements of ASTM C 216 or C 62, grade SW.
3. The average compressive strength of the units should be not less than 6000 psi.
4. The initial rate of absorption (suction) of the brick units should be less than 35 g per 30 sq in. of net surface area.
5. No silicone treatment should be permitted on any surface of the units to be bonded to mortar.
6. Surfaces of units to be bonded to mortar should be free of loose sand or other loose coating material.
There are, however, many units which do not comply with all of the characteristics listed above, but perform quite well with high-bond mortar when tested as a masonry assemblage. Also, many units meeting all the above requirements may not perform well. For these reasons, all brick proposed for use with Sarabond high-bond mortar should undergo preliminary testing to assure that the brick and mortar are compatible. In no case should a brick be assumed compatible just because it is similar to other brick having the same physical characteristics. Brick produced by the same manufacturer can vary in properties over a period of time. Different shaped units of the same clay and manufacturing process may also perform differently.
Figure 2 shows a flexural prism test in accordance with ASTM E 518, Standard Methods of Test for Flexural Bond Strength of Masonry. This test is used to check the compatibility between brick and mortar. The test procedure gives the ultimate flexural tensile strength, f', which is a good measure of the bond strength between brick and mortar. This small flexural prism test is recommended for use as a quality control measure, but is not recommended for the determination of design stresses, except as provided for in Table 1.
Brick proposed for a project should be selected at least two months prior to delivery to the jobsite or fabrication plant. This will provide ample time to run compatibility tests and develop proper field controls before actual panels are fabricated.
Below is a suggested check list for any project using high-bond mortar:
1. Flexural prism tests on all proposed brick (7 and 28-day); test prisms to be made with brick and mortar materials proposed for use in actual construction.
2. Transverse wall tests to determine allowable design stresses. (See Fig. 3.)
3. Preconstruction conference with architect, engineer, masonry contractor, brick supplier and high-bond mortar additive supplier to set dimensions and responsibilities.
4. Quality control procedures and tests to be carried on throughout construction. (See Technical Notes 40 and 40A.)
