Bureau of Land Management
U.S. Department of Interior, Roseburg, Oregon
Architect: Ralph Appleman & Associates
Structural Engineer: Lewis Ellingwood
Landscape Architect: John Herbst
General Contractor: Jack Mathis
Mason Contractor: Southern Oregon Masonry, Inc.
Using a new size concrete masonry unit, 10" x 12" x 12", Architect Ralph Appleman designed this Bureau of Land Management Office Complex in Roseburg, Oregon. The intent was to create a massive scale using a single unit for economy. Eliminating insulation, yet meeting energy conservation requirements, also was of prime concern so six foot overhangs were utilized to protect the masonry. This reduced the sealant applications for waterproofing and aided the insulation characteristics of the loadbearing masonry walls.
The walls were grouted in 8 foot lifts and conform to the UBC Code. Vertical rods were placed in the grout with the masonry units threaded over them and lowered into position.
