MCAA Convention Report
(Continued from page 20)
Pardue, Jr., Portland, Ore.; Region H. Oscar Person, Burlingame, Calif., and Region I. R. E. Beaupre, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada.
The major social event of the convention, the MCAA Annual Banquet and Dinner Dance, was held Tuesday evening. Acting as master of ceremonies was George A. Miller, MCAA Executive Vice President, who introduced the officers and regional vice presidents and their wives, as well as other dignitaries in the audience. The musical presentation of "The Cavalcade of Jazz" was the entertainment highlight, followed by dancing.
MCAA's 37th annual convention was concluded on Wednesday, January 26, with a two-part presentation on "Rough Terrain Fork Lifts" by the MCAA Material Handling, Safety and Education Committees. The first part of the session served to introduce MCAA's new publication, the "Rough Terrain Fork Lift Safety Training Manual," the first safety training guide of its type for rough terrain fork lift operation.
The three-part work was developed to promote a number of benefits for mason contractors, including compliance with OSHA safety regulations, greater job safety, protection from death and injury, respect for and proper care of equipment, greater productivity through proper operating procedures, and a more professional attitude on the part of those who operate the technically advanced and expensive rough terrain fork lifts used by today's mason contractors.
While there is other safety literature available for industrial fork lifts, mainly the indoor type, this is the first instructional guide for the safe operation of rough terrain fork lifts for the construction industry directed primarily toward the masonry field.
The text was developed through the coordinated efforts of MCAA's Material Handling, Safety and Education Committees, with input from various fork lift manufacturers, safety professionals and consultants. The project was coordinated and authored by Mac Terry, Executive Director of the Colorado Mason Contractors Association.
The underlying concept of this new teaching guide is programmed learning wherein the student answers questions in the book and takes review quizzes at the end of each section. The administrator (instructor) can be an individual mason contractor, training center or union. (Information on ordering the Manual may be obtained from the MCAA Executive Office in Oakbrook Terrace, III.)
Part two of the Rough Terrain Fork Lift session consisted of an outdoor exhibit of rough terrain equipment on the parking lot adjacent to the hotel. The exhibitors included Koehring Construction Equipment Division, Loed Corporation, Lull Engineering Co., Pettibone Corporation, and TCI Power Products. Representatives of these nationally prominent firms were on hand to explain the safety and operating features of their equipment to mason contractors. In all, ten pieces of equipment were exhibited.
NOTE: The preceding report constitutes the Secretary's minutes of the 1977 MCAA Convention. A transcript of the proceedings will be on file at MCAA headquarters and may be reviewed by interested members of the Association.
