MONEY-SAVING IDEAS FOR MASON CONTRACTORS

Texas Mason Contractor Has Them
Rolling In the Aisles!

THE PROBLEM

The construction of block partition walls at Texas Stadium in Irving presented Dee Brown Masonry. Inc. of Dallas with the normal aggravation of relocating his masonry scaffold to each of ten different work sites-all of which were connected by concrete walkways but were located in areas with relatively low ceilings.

The usual picking up of assembled "Adjustomatic" scaffold towers with a forklift was not practical. But, after checking with Strawn Rental, from which Brown was renting the scaffold, the following rolling tower system was developed.

THE SOLUTION

Jackscrews with base plates were inserted and tied into the legs of the 6 ft. 4 in. heavy-duty, walk-thru frames, and jackscrews with casters were inserted into the innerstructure uprights. While laying the wall, the outside jacks carried the full construction load. Then, at move time, the extra materials were removed, the jacks were adjusted so that the scaffold was supported by the casters, and the entire erected scaffold was rolled to the next wall area. After readjusting the jacks, the scaffold was ready for stocking and reuse.

Four rolling towers were used. Each tower was moved ten times for a total labor-saving of 50 to 60 percent over the conventional handling methods, according to Brown. Using the same system on a recently finished U.S. Post Office in Dallas, with concrete floor inside and asphalt outside, Brown reported approximately a 70 percent labor savings plus a reduction in the total scaffold required for the job.

The manufacturer of the Adjustomatic scaffold is Automatic Devices, Inc. of Maryland Heights, Mo. Strawn Merchandise is the distributor. Dee Brown Masonry owns and rents the Adjustomatic scaffolds.
