Art Students Create Ad for Masonry
Brick has built many things in the past, from colonial homes to backyard barbecues. But brick never built a two-year scholarship to art school. Until now.
At the recently completed Vocational Industrial Clubs of America (VICA) Skill Olympics held in Cincinnati, Ohio, 37 secondary and post-secondary level students competed in the commercial art category, whose theme was: "Brick-More Than Just a Pretty Face."
The winning ad, created by Jeffrey Jackson, Passaic County Vocational School, Wayne, NJ, shows a brick wall with a V-shaped portion removed and copy and headlines stripped in behind the wall. The close-up illustration focuses attention on the headline and body copy.
The contestants were given only five hours to create the ad's illustration, including thumbnail sketches, roughs, comprehensives and photo-ready art. First prize winners in the secondary and post-secondary divisions of the commercial art contest received $5.000 scholarships to the Art Institute of America.

The National Authority on Brick Construction
Look closely. It has its practical side. Behind the face is solid value for the homeowner.
Brick walls save energy. Because of their mass, brick walls help keep the heat out in summer and keep it in during the winter; a big factor lowering heating bills.
A brick home never needs painting. And chances are fire Insurance premiums will be lower, because brick doesn't burn.
Its pretty face reflects both charm and beauty. It can be a lively patterned floor. A brick wall can be a timeless background for plants, pictures and parties. A brick fireplace adds personality to any family room the year round.
It's the brick in building that makes it highest in resale value. Durability, increased fire safety and sheer safety help brick homes to sell faster. It is brick that is the heritage and the future of the country.
