Gateview at Albany Hill
Albany, California
Architects: Hallenbeck, Chamorro & Lin
This $16,000,000 project was switched to loadbearing concrete masonry after the architects studied alternative structural systems. ONE REASON: Cost PSF masonry, including material and labor, $393
Pictured above is Phase I of Gateview at Albany Hill, completed in 1976, a new "vertical village" of seven towers overlooking San Francisco Bay.
When this project was originally conceived there wasn't one square foot of unit masonry construction in it. Now it is totally loadbearing concrete masonry-with 2,000 more residential units to come.
What happened? The architects were searching for the best possible result for their clients at the lowest possible cost.
The final selection included loadbearing concrete masonry for the towers, a special customized "shingle block" for the exterior facing, a combed-faced concrete masonry unit for corridors, and concrete masonry pavers for the plaza.
Concrete masonry, building the new America and helping build your future.
