TEK 87 - Construction of Concrete Masonry Pavements

Introduction
Solid Concrete block paving for vehicular traffic consists of small 'hand' sized concrete masonry units, manufactured to high strength and precise dimensional tolerances, and placed so that they are locked in place both horizontally and vertically. Durable as well as attractive, concrete block paving offers the designer greater scope for varied treatments, and a more suitable scale for many situations. It is ideal for residential areas, shopping malls, parking areas, and roadways where speeds are not greater than about 40 miles per hour. The continual problem of repairs to underground utility lines is greatly simplified; paved areas can be opened for repairs and the concrete paving block replaced to their original appearance for immediate use without leaving a patched appearance.

Materials
A concrete block pavement consists of a wearing surface of concrete block bedded on a layer of sand over a suitable sub-base. In order for the concrete block wearing surface to function properly as regards durability, it must be composed of high quality units. At present there is no ASTM Standard for those units and to fill this need, NCMA has developed a specification for Solid Concrete block paving units for vehicular traffic. Designated as NCMA A-10-77, the Specification is as follows:

SPECIFICATION FOR SOLID CONCRETE MASONRY PAVING UNITS FOR VEHICULAR TRAFFIC

1. Scope
1.1 This specification covers solid concrete masonry paving units for use as paving for vehicular traffic.

Note 1-Concrete units covered by this specification are made from lightweight or normal weight aggregates, or both.

Note 2-When particular features are desired, such as weight classification, higher compressive strength, surface textures, finish, color, or other special features, such properties should be specified separately by the purchaser. However, local sellers should be consulted as to the availability of units having the desired features.

Note 3-The values stated in U.S. customary units are to be regarded as the standard.

2. Materials
2.1 Cementitious Materials-Materials shall conform to the following applicable ASTM Specifications:

2.1.1 Portland Cements-Specification C 150, for Portland Cement.
