Tri-City Baptist Temple
Gladstone, Oregon

Architect: John W. Foster, AIA
Structural Engineer: James G. Pierson, Inc.
General Contractor: L. C. Uppinghouse
Mason Contractor: Smith Masonry Contractors, Inc.

Inset brick and projected columns create interest in the chancel of this all-masonry constructed church. The architect selected a heavy deck ceiling and glue-laminated beams to create the acoustical requirements of the sanctuary.

Designed in 8" thru-the-wall brick units, the Tri-City Baptist Temple adapts well to the residential area it serves. Window openings are accented by the use of a darker shade of brown brick.

The architect originally designed this church in wood because of economic necessity in the initial cost requirement. However, an alert parishioner, a bricklayer by trade, inquired of the pastor, Kenneth McCormick, and the church's building committee if a comparative cost in masonry had been considered. After gathering estimates on labor and material from local mason contractors, the final decision was revised in favor of masonry construction.

The result of this effort is an 8 single, thru-the-wall brick unit, grouted and reinforced to comply with the local building code. The exposed interior brick walls and wood plank ceiling afford excellent accoustical properties and meet insulation requirements as well.

An unusual property feature was adapted to save excavation costs. The site was originally a water reservoir built in 1903. By adapting the design of the church to the contour of this reservoir, the architect built into his plan classrooms in the lower level.

PERFORMANCE...
OVER A TON OF
NATIVE STONE TO
SPLIT FIELD
STONE IN LESS
THAN
1/2 HOUR!

To be specific...2,700 pounds of irregular shaped native field stone were sliced, like bread, into beautiful, workable "split field stone" by one operator in less than one half hour with the powerful Hydra split Model 2100. The exclusive "triangle" of hardened tool steel blades, backed up with 100 tons of hydraulic force, produce a precise and controlled split every time. Regardless of the type of or shape of stone, the Model 2100 makes stone production practical and profitable.
