MICHIGAN "M AWARD" WINNERS
MCAA member mason contractors honored with "M Awards" for their work on projects judged excellent in masonry design were Jack Cavanaugh (left), vice president, Cavanaugh & Soave, Inc., Troy, Mich., for the 601 Washington Boulevard Building, Detroit, and Terry O'Neill, president, Terry O'Neill Masonry Contractor, Southfield, Mich., for the Troy Place office complex in Troy. The awards were presented by the Masonry Institute of Michigan at a January 28 banquet in the Detroit Plaza Hotel.

More than 200 students submitted entries and the 10 winners-five seniors and five juniors-split $1,000 in cash prizes.

Each student class engaged in a semester-long project to design a hypothetical building for a real site in the Detroit area. The seniors worked on the design of a library building for the LIT campus, and the juniors on a housing complex for senior citizens in Birmingham. Their entries were judged by panels of Detroit-area architects. The student awards were presented by Joel Lutz, president of the Masonry Institute, and Karl Greimel, dean of LIT's School of Architecture.

Student winners in the biennial design competition sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Michigan for students in the School of Architecture at Lawrence Institute of Technology were Frank X. Arvan (2nd from left) and Christopher C. Davis (2nd from right). Arvan won the senior competition for his design of a library building on the LIT campus. Davis' design of a senior citizens housing complex was judged best in the junior competition. Both received cash prizes of $250. Congratulating the winners are Frank Soave (left), vice president of the Masonry Institute, and Karl Greimel (right), dean of LIT's School of Architecture. The school, located in Southfield, Mich., is the nation's largest undergraduate school of architecture.
