Brick Industry Makes Energy Efficiency Gains
The brick industry is making dramatic improvements in the energy efficiency of the brick manufacturing process, the Brick Institute of America has reported to the federal government.
The industry has already exceeded the conservation targets set for it by the Federal Energy Administration, according to a report on FEA's Voluntary Industry Energy Conservation Program.
FEA has called on the brick industry to reduce the use of energy in the brick manufacturing process by 16% between 1972 and 1980. At the end of 1976, FEA figures showed an improvement of more than 17% in the energy efficiency of brick manufacturing.
New Plasma Device Produces Cheaper Cement
A process using a new form of plasma technology to produce a wide range of hydraulic cements, including portland cement, has been developed jointly by two British companies.
Claimed to be the first commercially viable process of its type, it can produce cement 25% cheaper than conventional cement. The principle involves a plasma gun in which an electric arc emanating from a cathode is forced through a funnel.
