Finally, there was this question: "Should we try to work out mutually more acceptable retainage plans to protect owners, architects and general contractors while also giving relief to subcontractors who finish their work early on projects?"

Half or more of every group agreed that there is a "considerable" or "very great" need to do some work on retainage plans. Very few people said there is only "some" or "little" need for this.
Continued Study of Retainage Urged
In summary, retainage appears to be a topic of considerable concern in the local construction industry. Probably most would agree with the idea that a construction owner should not be expected to pay in full until construction work has been completed and meets agreed-upon specifications. Disagreement lies more in the area of how the idea is put into practice. In any event, there appears to be agreement that retainage needs continued study within the industry to find more acceptable ways to make the idea work.
Embarcadero Station Features Masonry
The Embarcadero Station in San Francisco is one of the largest in the Bay Area Rapid Transit system. As with other BART stations, it was designed to handle a heavy flow of foot traffic over a long period of time. For this station the material chosen was marble and granite for floors, walls and decorative features. The unusually large sections of stone required the use of special equipment to handle the extra weight, but the job progressed much faster than it would have using smaller modules, according to the Masonry Institute in San Francisco.
