ROUGH TERRAIN FORKLIFT

shooting boom feature started to gain in popularity, progressing to the point where today all of the forklift manufacturers (other than those of vertical-lift units) offer at least one model equipped with this type of boom or elevating device.

During this transitional period, West Brick Buggy Corp. was purchased by Koehring, in 1966, and Econmobile was acquired by Desa Industries, in 1971, and subsequently phased out.

Beginning in 1965, annual sales of the loader and boom type rough terrain forklifts began to increase rapidly: a one-year sales peak of 1,500 units was reached in 1973-74. Vertical-lift units also enjoyed a rapid sales growth at the same time. However, it is difficult to estimate the annual sales of vertical-lift units as substantial sales were made to other than general and mason contractors.

During most of this rapid growth, manufacturers' offerings tended to stay fairly static from the standpoint of improvements and options, and diesel power gradually became the desired power choice during this period. However, in the early 70s, manufacturers began introducing new, improved models. Pettibone, for one, in the mid-1970s began marketing an 8,000-pound capacity, 33-foot lift height, telescoping boom model which had a frame tilting feature the purpose of which was to compensate for uneven terrain and keep the load level to the landing site. It was also equipped with four-wheel drive and torque converter.

In 1972 Koehring introduced a 10.000-pound capacity
