Southern Homes: More Living for Less

Southern homebuyers continue to get more house for less money than homebuyers in other regions of the country, according to the Brick Institute of America Region Nine.

An analysis of the latest housing statistics released by the U.S. Bureau of Census indicates that the South continues to lead the nation in the quality of housing available to homebuyers, according to BIA. Southern homes are larger, have more amenities, and cost less money than in any other part of the country, BIA said.

The average sale price of new Southern homes in 1977 was $48,100, lowest in the nation. In comparison, the country's highest average housing costs in 1977 were registered in the West ($60,700), followed by the North Central area ($55,200) and the Northeast ($54,800).

The Census Bureau report also noted that the South outranks all other areas in the number of new homes of durable brick construction-61 percent.

SOCIAL SECURITY NOTES

Because of recent changes in the Social Security law, many people applying for reduced benefits before age 65 will not be eligible for retroactive payments, the Department of HEW has announced. Generally, reduced benefits for these persons can begin no earlier than the month in which the application is filed.

Prior to January, 1978, most persons could elect back benefits-for as many as 12 months prior to the month of application-if all other requirements were met during the retroactive period. With a few exceptions, this provision no longer applies.

The change in the law will affect workers applying for reduced retirement benefits between age 62-65, and survivors of deceased workers who apply for widow's or widower's benefits between age 60-65.
