Bricklaying, Inc. Wins 1978
D.C. Building Congress Award
Top honors in masonry craftsmanship went to Bricklaying, Inc. in the recent 1978 Washington (D.C.) Building Congress Craftsmanship Awards for the 818 Office Building at 818 Connecticut Ave., N.W. in Washington, D.C.
Of particular note in the prominent structure was the outstanding vertical alignment and the use of soldier lintels without special shapes. The 300,000 brick, both oversize and standard, were manufactured by Darlington and supplied by United Materials & Services of Vienna. Va. The award-winning structure was designed by Vlastimil Koubek, with Lenkin Co. the general contractor.
Bricklaying. Inc., Brentwood. Md., was also a finalist with the same project in the 1978 Masonry Excellence Award competition sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Washington, D.C.
Acme Brick Starts on Handset Line,
Completes New Kiln Construction
Acme Brick Co., Fort Worth, Texas, the nation's largest brick manufacturer, has started construction on a "handset line" at the company's operation in Tulsa. Okla.
This handset capability will be geared to the production of specialty items such as round-edge pavers and solid brick as well as to architectural modular brick production. The expansion is designed to complement continuing efforts for more mechanization in brick production.
Other modifications are being completed to the existing dryers to allow processing of 100.000 brick per day Completion is scheduled for late 1978.
The company also announced it has completed construction on the first of two periodic kilns at its Perla, Ark plant. The new kilns are expected to increase plant brick production capacity by 92%.
