NORTH YORK MUNICIPAL BUILDING
continued from page 7
12-ft. concrete columns at grade. 26-ft. columns half way up the slope, and 36-ft. columns that reach from the third level to the peak 60 ft. above grade.
Another major feature of the building is its atrium space design. Each interior floor overlooks the other as well as the multi-level pedestrian streets, commercial area and cafeteria. Three glass-enclosed elevators in the center of the building service the six office floors as well as three parking floors below the building. Continuous slots in the back of the elevator bays and windows in the elevator cars permit a spectacular changing view of the court as you ascend.

The building, throughout the exterior and interior, is a brown colored brick-Whitacre Greer full range, iron spot units, with floor pavers imported from Ohio. Other materials include dark brown metal and brown carpet.
In the atrium area, all structural elements are exposed as well as the mechanical and electrical services, which are painted in vibrant colors. A dominant feature of this area and rising the full height of the building is the striking metal sculpture entitled "Golden Birds" designed by the renowned Canadian sculptor, Micheline Beauchemin of Granby, Quebec.
After touring the new Municipal Building, one observer commented: "The interior masonry is a delight and has been achieved through the use of many sided and angled brick. All in all, the project is a very pleasant one."
