Bricklayers Given St. Louis AIA Craftsmanship Awards

Three St. Louis area bricklayers-William Cartledge of Roy A. Elam, Inc., St. Louis, and William Conrad and Harold Vaughn of Fred L. Davis Co., Bridgeton, Mo.-were recipients of craftsmanship awards presented recently by the St. Louis Chapter of the American Institute of Architects.

The awards were given for two projects very different in size and scope but alike in excellence of masonry detailing and execution. Cartledge's award was for the beautiful rounded brick stairwells and interior walls and great expanses of brick paving on the General American Life Insurance office building designed by internationally renowned architect Philip Johnson.

Conrad's and Vaughn's awards were both for the Old Town Village condominiums designed by St. Louis architect Louis R. Saur. These nostalgic looking buildings are highlighted by the outstanding detailing of the brickwork in the arched windows and on the chimneys. This event marked the fifth year that the St. Louis AIA chose bricklaying for its craftsmanship award.

The General American Life Insurance Office Building designed by Johnson & Burgee combines the beauty of rounded brick stairwells and interior walls with the durability of brick paving.
