The California Middle School

The California Middle School is an excellent example of fine masonry craftsmanship. Common brick with 25 percent klinker is laid in Flemish bond in the abutment feature that is repeated a number of times in the building. The same materials and skill went into the decorative background for the outdoor forum in the same school. Architect for the project was Unger-Blurock Joint Venture. Robert G. Fisher Co., Inc. was the general contractor with masonry by M.E.M. Construction. Inc.
LOADBEARING LAWN
The Masonry Institute of Hawaii is promoting "Grasscrete," a concrete masonry paving system that permits grass to grow through numerous openings creating what the institute calls a "loadbearing lawn." The system is hailed as an aesthetically pleasing and economical way to provide parking when more areas are taken over by cars. It also solves the serious water run-off problems which are inevitable with blacktop paving.
