HIGH-LIFT GROUTING

Reinforcing
All reinforcing steel shall be accurately placed in strict accordance with the drawings and notes thereon. Vertical and horizontal reinforcing may be wired and held in place prior to the start of brickwork or the horizontal reinforcing be placed as the work progresses. It is recommended that wherever possible the horizontal reinforcing be placed as the work progresses and the vertical reinforcing dropped into position after the completion of bricklaying prior to grouting.

Ties
Ties shall be #9 wire (ASTM A-82) in the form of rectangles 4 inches wide and 2 inches less than the thickness of the wall. No kinks, water drips or deformations shall be allowed. Ties shall be laid not to exceed 24 inches on center horizontally and 16 inches on center vertically for running bond, and 12 inches on center vertically for stack bond. The ties shall be placed in the bed joints of the two wythes simultaneously and aligned vertically so as not to interfere with vibrating.

There has been some concern over the possibility of blowout during grouting. On one project, there was a blowout which occurred adjacent to a door jamb. In laying up the wall, the tie was omitted at the bottom corner because of interference with an anchor from the door jamb. Specified procedure must be followed closely!

This, of course, is not a concern of the engineer. It is merely an economic penalty upon the contractor and, as such, is self-policing.

Cleaning
Mortar projections and mortar droppings shall be washed out of the grout space and off the reinforcing steel at least twice a day (just before stopping at noon and the same at the end of the working day) by water through a high-pressure jet nozzle.

Some masons will use this method, improved slightly in some ways. For example, some have used a stick to knock loose any mortar that might squeeze out of the back of the brick wythe, and some have coated the bottom of the grout space with a light layer of sand which would prevent bond of mortar droppings to the foundation and would be washed out easily at the conclusion of the laying.

There might be minor deviations of execution indicative of good imaginative workmanship.

Grout Mix
Standard 2000 psi grout mix shall be one (1) part Portland cement, three (3) parts sand, and two (2) parts pea gravel, with the aggregates measured by volume in a damp, loose condition. The grout mix shall contain a minimum of six (6) sacks of Portlant cement per yard. An admixture such as Suconem Grout-Aid or equal shall be used in the grout mix. One (1) pound of Grout-Aid shall be added for each sack of cement with a maximum of six (6) pounds per yard.

Grouting
No grout shall be poured unless the brickwork has been allowed to set a minimum of three days in hot weather or five days in cold, damp weather. The grout shall be delivered in transit mix trucks. Water shall be added so that the slump is near maximum. approximately 11 inches without segregation. The grout shall be pumped from the mixer into the grout space as rapidly as practical and discarded if not in place within 1½ hours after water is first added to the batch. Grout shall be placed in a continuous pour in continued on page 26
