General Portland Reports
General Portland, Inc., one of the nation's largest cement producers, reports that its net loss for the first quarter was one-third of the net loss for the same period a year ago.
The Dallas-based firm said first quarter sales increased 8%, from $38.7 million to $41.7 million. This resulted in a net loss of $1.1 million, compared to the same 1977 period. Severe winter weather was blamed for the business decline.

ARA Award-Winning Design Features Unique Steeple
One of the award-winning architectural designs in the recent competition sponsored by the Illinois State Council of the Society of American Registered Architects (ARA) in Chicago was this major addition to the Sixth Church of Christ/Scientist in Washington, D.C.
Faulkner-Faulkner & Associates, Hinsdale, Ill., designed this masonry addition to a small colonial structure built 15 years ago. The design solution developed by the Faulkner firm incorporates the original structure into a completed edifice so that a single design concept is expressed.
Stepping inside one may look up approximately the height of a four story building into the 65 ft. hollow steeple that has been finished on the interior as an extension of the entrance hall ceiling-a unique architectural expression that effectively integrates the steeple with the interior space.
ACI Revises Standards On Concrete Mix
The American Concrete Institute has published revised standards on selecting proportions for normal and heavyweight concrete and for structural lightweight concrete.
Recommended Practice for Selecting Proportions for Normal and Heavyweight Concrete (ACI 211.1-77) was revised to allow some flexibility in mix proportioning when air-entrained concrete is specified. To this effect three levels of air content are given for each chosen workability and aggregate size in function of the severity of exposure.
The standards are available at $8.50 per copy ($5.00 per copy to ACI members) plus $1.50 for postage and handling. Contact: American Concrete Institute, Box 19150 Redford Station, Detroit, Mich. 48219.
