Concrete Masonry Construction Details-Commercial Buildings
94
Good construction details are necessary to the satisfactory performance of structures. Among the various details used, connections of masonry walls to floors and roofs are particularly important. Connections cause building elements to work together in resisting vertical and lateral loads and transferring them to foundations; for this reason, they must be structurally adequate. Where they occur at exterior walls, connections must also be designed with provisions for resistance to water penetration and differential movement.
This TEK includes illustrations of a number of details that may be employed as a guide for building construction using concrete masonry. They were selected as being more pertinent to commercial and similar type buildings where masonry is used in conjunction with steel joists, prestressed T's, hollow core concrete plank, etc., and illustrate some details using interior and exterior concrete masonry walls with various commonly-used types of floor and roof systems. The details shown were taken from NCMA's Technical Report No. 90, Architectural and Engineering Concrete Masonry Details for Building Construction, 1976.
