Masonry Wall Water Penetration Report
At a recent joint meeting of the Mason Contractors Association of Greater Chicago and the Mason Contractors Association of Du Page County, Ill., the first public results of the water penetration testing program involving masonry construction in the Chicago metropolitan area was presented. The program has been under testing since 1976.
Russell H. Brown, Ph.D., associate professor of civil engineering at Clemson University. South Carolina. gave his report to approximately 160 mason contractors and other interested masonry personnel at Arley's Restaurant. Downers Grove, III.
Dr. Brown made a subsequent presentation on March 15 at MCAA's 28th International Masonry Conference in Las Vegas.
Lone Star Industries Enters Roofing Field
Lone Star Industries, Inc.. Greenwich, Conn., a leading producer of Portland cement, ready-mix concrete and sand/gravel aggregates, announced it has agreed in principle to acquire Mineral Aggregates, Inc., a Tampa (Fla.) producer of roofing granules and abrasives as its initial entry into the field.
Mineral Aggregates had sales of approximately $3 million in 1977. Its products, produced from bottom slag. a byproduct of public utility coal combustion, are used primarily for industrial roofing and as a blasting abrasive.
New Alberta MCA Office
The Masonry Contractors Association of Alberta, Edmonton Chapter., has announced the opening of its new office at 16743-113 Ave., Edmonton, Alberta, T5M 2X2.
"Working in conjunction with the Alberta Masonry Institute, Calgary Masonry Contractors Association and the Canadian Masonry Contractors Association, it is hoped to keep abreast of changing technology, codes, and so forth by holding educational seminars and providing publications to define and assist in solving masonry problems," said Ronald H. Welch, chapter manager.
