In the past five years, the cost of owning a car or truck in the U.S. has increased at about twice the rate of inflation, according to estimates made by Hertz Corp. The car rental and leasing firm says that operating costs amounted to an average of $2.615 per vehicle in 1977, up 10.5% in a year. This translates into 27.12 per mile in 1977 as compared with 14.7€ per mile in 1972. In the five-year period from 1972 and 1977, the nation's inflation rate has gone up 45%; the cost of owning and operating a car or truck has gone up 84%.
More than half of the increase, says Hertz, is attributable to rising vehicle prices, insurance premiums, interest charges, fuel and maintenance expenses. Average travel per vehicle in 1977 was 9.649 miles. Car expenses in 1977 consumed about 27.1% of the average American's personal income from the year, actually a smaller share of income than the nearly 48% in 1950. So, while you may pay more to own and operate your car this year, it's a lot less as a proportion of your annual income than you spent 17 years ago. Journal of American Insurance.
