Winners Chosen for Hammurabi
Masonry Design Awards in Oregon
The architectural firm of Bloodworth, Peterson. Ellis & Eslick captured the top Honor Award in the 1978 Hammurabi Awards Excellence in Masonry Design competition sponsored by the Masonry Institute of Oregon. The firm was cited for its design of radio station KPDQ's new building in Portland.
Additional recognition was given to the engineering firm of Burgstahler, Holmes and Carlson: general contractor Lloyd R. Watt: mason contractor L. C. Pardue. Inc. (MCAA), and bricklayer foreman Keith Youngdel.
Merit Awards were presented to architect Ernest C. Wilson, Jr. for the new downtown Portland Nordstrom store, and to architect Ben J. Suppes, AIA, for the Canby Floral Company building in Portland.
Also recognized for the Nordstrom building were general contractor, The Koll Co.; masonry foreman Bruce Plum; tile contractor J. A. Wiley Co., and tile foreman Fred Rigutto. For the Canby Floral building, recognition was given to engineer Stanley Carlson; general contractor Reimers & Jolivette, Inc., and masonry foreman Gar Nikes.
The mason contractor on both of the Merit Award projects was L. C. Pardue, giving the firm a clean sweep of all three masonry craftsmanship honors in the Hammurabi competition.
The jury that selected the winners consisted of three prominent Northwest architects-Pietro Belluschi, FAIA, consulting architect; Charles William Rusch, head of the University of Oregon's School of Architecture, and James R. McGranahan, AIA, president of the AIA Washington Council.
