GSA Sells Topless Bar and Restaurant

The Lone Star Beef House, a restaurant and bar owned by the General Services Administration, has been sold to William A. Johnson of Spencerville. Md. The Lone Star, which has become a popular luncheon spot since the Justice Department and, later, GSA took over its ownership, features topless dancers. The bar, located at 504 Ninth St., N.W.. Washington, D.C., in the downtown business district, was sold for $51.250.

The bar and restaurant came into government possession when the part-owner, an ex-employee of the Department of Transportation, was convicted of embezzling government money. He used $75,000 from these embezzled funds to purchase the Lone Star last August. The Justice Department acquired the remaining share from H. Eugene Young, who relinquished it without consideration when the Internal Revenue Service sought back taxes. The Justice Department transferred sole ownership to GSA in July.

The Lone Star was sold by GSA's Federal Property Resources Service, Region 3.

Virginia National Bank Building Recognized for Masonry Design

Moseley & Hening Associates, Inc., Richmond architectural firm, is the recipient of the Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects' award for Design Excellence In Masonry Construction. The award, presented recently by William Grigg, president of the Virginia Masonry Council at the Virginia Society's annual awards dinner, recognized Moseley & Hening's design of the Danville branch of Virginia National Bank.

Unusual triangular forms have created a dramatic identity for the Danville bank. The triangular masses evolved primarily in response to the steeply sloped site and a desire to create a bold. image-making structure. The resulting building's rather abstract geometric massing and retaining walls accommodate the slope in a graceful manner.

The awards jury consisted of Donald Cantry, national editor of the AIA Journal: Henry L.. Kamphoefnell, former dean, School of Design. North Carolina State University, and Arthur Cotten Moore of Arthur Cotton Moore Associates, Washington, D.C.
